Do you know the difference between a ‘degradable’ and ‘biodegradable’ plastic bag? Unfortunately, not many consumers do, and many plastics manufacturers have taken advantage of this, exploiting the term ‘degradable’ as a marketing tool. To highlight this issue, rigorous standards have been developed in the US, Europe and in Australia, to test the validity of eco-friendly claims.
becausewecare™ have become the first company in the world to conform to Australian Standard AS4736-2006, and receive the new compostable certification from the Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA). Just look for the seedling logo.
In addition, becausewecare™ compostable and biodegradable products are also certified to meet the American Standard ASTM D6400 by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), and the European standard EN 13432-2000 by Organic Waste Systems (OWS) in Belgium.
All becausewecare™ products have undergone extensive environmental testing at Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia with further testing completed at Organic Waste Systems in Kent, Belgium. Our BF90 series has received certification at every stage of the production process, from the manufacture of our resin bead through to our finished printed products. We have achieved this by using soy-based inks that have been specifically developed for our compostable products.
If there is a product that you’re interested in, which claims to be compostable or biodegradable, ask to see a relevant certification from the manufacturer. For further information, visit the ABA, BPI or OWS websites or send us an email.
