Eco-Toxicity Testing

Eco-toxicity Test  becausewecare™ products have been tested to make sure there are no harmful effects on plant growth and germination once the bioplastics begin to decompose.  To investigate any statistically significant difference, a sample was composted according to the ISO

16929:2002(E) standard test method.  The resulting compost was the

compost used for the toxicity test. To maximise the integrity of the test,

control compost was also separately prepared, without any packaging

material added to the blend. Two plant species from two different

families were chosen:  Monocotyledonae Barley (Hordeum

vulgare), and Dicotyledonae Pea (Pisum sativum). These plants were

grown under controlled hydroponic conditions.  The test and control compost samples were then mixed thoroughly with garden potting mix, and examined

under aerobic composting processes in line with OECD 208 A and the

evaluation criteria specified in AS4736-2006.


There were no visible phytotoxic effects; germination and biomass

percentages in both plant species of compost were higher than 90%. The

quality of the compost had not been affected negatively in any way. In fact,

the presence of becausewecare™ bioplastic in the initial blend enhanced

the growth and biomass production.  In conclusion, becausewecare™

bioplastics have absolutely no harmful after-effects on soil as part of the

degradation process.
